Original mechanical log / patent log .... super eye-catcher
back to categoryWow, you won't find a 2nd like that easily
I especially see a cool eye-catcher for the office, in the man cave, the pub or for the maritime collector 👌
However, the glass on the meter is missing.
Is decoratively mounted on a shelf of 1.25 mtr long and was a gift for the Captain of MV De Prinsendam, De Prinsendam was a cruise ship that was built at De Merwede in Hardinxveld-Giessendam for the Holland-America Line 🛳
It is a so-called mechanical log/patent log...for measuring the speed of a ship.
This is therefore a measuring instrument with which the speed and/or distance traveled by a vessel through the water or relative to a specific location on the water surface can be measured.
The log has been used since the Middle Ages, it is a plank with a cord with knots on it.
The plank was thrown overboard and later retrieved.
The speed could be calculated from the number of knots counted, which is why speed is still expressed in 'knots'.
Must be from the 40's, 50's.
Can be picked up in Hardinxveld for 350,- or will be brought in consultation
